Jesus said that the 2 most important commandments are to love the Lord and to love one another. Though these are the most important commandments, they were not the first commandments to be issued by God. The number 1 commandment was to rest. I believe this is because God knew it would be impossible to obey the other commandments if we did not consistently have a time of refreshment. So if you want a chance at obeying the most important commandments, you need to first obey the first commandment.

When it comes to observing the Sabbath, it’s not important which day of the week you do it on, but it is important that you do it every week. Though we are no longer bound to The Law, we would be wise to respect the principles that The Law was founded on. Principles don’t go away. In other words, if you eat too much pork you will get high cholesterol and have health complications and likely a shortened life span. That doesn’t change! The Sabbath is one day a week when we stop pursuing more. It is a day of rest. When we observe the Sabbath, we are reminded that our hope is in The Lord. It is when we remember that it is “Not by might nor by power but by my spirit says The Lord.” (Zechariah 4:6) During the Sabbath, we reconnect to the power of God by laying down our potential, and trusting in God. “What profit is it to gain the whole world and lose your own soul?” (Mark 8:36)
